Thomas Doll has become one of the world's top coaches to color the League 1 competition this season. Before the fierce duel between Persib Bandung and Persija Jakarta, we had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Doll.
Persija drew attention when he announced the appointment of Thomas Doll as coach in mid-2022. Doll is an experienced coach from Germany with a wealth of experience. He has managed elite teams such as Borussia Dortmund and Hannover 96, Al Hilal, to APOEL.
The German tactician has eaten a lot of salt as a player. He wore the uniform of many major European clubs such as Lazio, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bari, to Hamburg SV.

No one expected Dole to spread its wings so far into Southeast Asia. The 56-year-old coach chose Jakarta as part of his career journey.
Dole recounts the impression of training in Indonesia, and the fanaticism of "crazy" Indonesian fans, into the rivalry between Persija and Persib.
Persija is your number one team in Indonesia. Have you had any strange experiences so far?
Previously, I didn't know anything about Indonesian football. You know that from Europe we watch a lot of football matches.
But I was very surprised by the quality, I'm talking about the quality of the game here. I see a lot of good football, not only when we play.
This means that Indonesian football is on the right track. The stadium is full [of spectators] to support and watch the match. The football game here is also fast with a lot of excitement.
I think for the future, if they work hard in this country starting from the academy in nurturing young players, their footballing future will be good. It must be the goal.
Speaking of Indonesian fans' "crazy" fanaticism about football, what do you think of them?
So far it's been really hard to believe, but positively. I remember when in our first friendly match after the pandemic, the stadium was full and the fans were singing after the match.
When they were in the field, everyone got chills. It was a wonderful moment. They [supporters] have come a long way. Jakmania is ubiquitous in Indonesia.
We have a good relationship with the supporters and president of Jakmania. This is a happy moment. Not only the way we played, but also the score, and then also the strength we gave on the pitch. But of course we need time, a lot of time.
Have you heard the crazy stories about Indonesian football? There is an example from a few years ago that players used to ride in armored vehicles to enter the field at the Persega and Persib matches.
Now that 2022 is coming, I think it's not necessary anymore. I understand that Persija is a competitor to [Persib] Bandung. But we should pay attention only to the football side, nothing more.
There can be no such thing as political. People want to watch beautiful football. There are families watching in the playground, there are children in the playground. I think we have to lead by example in order to show a beautiful football match. As a country, it's normal to have a lot of matches and it's normal to have a lot of derbies.
Also in Dortmund, many spectators sang in the stadium. But it shouldn't happen again at a football match where there are soldiers with tanks because only a handful of fans [who behave badly]. Not all fans are like this.
There are crazy fans out there, someone needs to deal with this. The police need to control this for everyone in the stadium. I'm not only talking about the football game, I'm talking about the people on the field as well.
Nobody wants to get scared and that shouldn't happen in every game and that should be the goal this weekend not only on the field but off the field as well.
I'm glad Indonesia has the Clásico too. I know it's an important match for both the camp and the fans. I also know my friend [Luis Milla], an ex-footballer my age. He's from Spain, he's a great footballer and a great coach.
I'm sure he will have the same ideas we have for a good football match.
Now they [Persib] have won the last three games. But we are in good shape. We hope the players come back in good health.
What is the striking difference between the Indonesian players and the German players in terms of discipline and eating habits?
no no no. When I arrived, we found players who were overweight, and I saw players who weren't perfect, who didn't have an individual training program. But when I see them now, they are willing to work hard on the field. They give up everything in every training session. I am very happy, they really want to change mentally. Not only the winning mentality, but also the desire to become a professional soccer player. They have to learn this, of course in Europe football is more dynamic. That's why I say we have to start the training [program] from the academy with fast and dynamic football training. Maybe one day the players will be as ready as the players in Europe. Players under the age of 12 are still kids, and they have to feel the same structure and can later make a difference. The coach has to put pressure on them and train in a different way. I'm sure they will be ready one day because we have fast players.
But technique, tactics, dynamics and sports aspects are all related to the mental aspect. It's a big deal and that's what we have to offer the young players. What do you think of the Indonesian players going through an international break? Of course the players who qualify for the national team are good players. They competed while holding the Indonesian flag. They will make Indonesians proud when they see the national team players. U-23, U-20 and U-19 teams, all national teams are very important. The players will certainly be proud to be in the national team. This is the most important thing in all countries. I am happy when we can send so many players to the national team. The Indonesian national team is now coached by Shin Tae Young, the man who beat Germany in the 2018 World Cup. What do you think of Shin Tae Young? Now anyone can beat the German national team. We played poorly in the 2018 World Cup, the players' performance was unmotivated.
Of course it will be a successful victory because Germany is the favourites. Shin Tae Young did well and did a great job. I've been here for four months, but I've never met him. Usually the club coach meets the coach of the national team because we send a lot of players to the national team. I was surprised we never met. No one came to say "hello". I've been here four months, and there was probably plenty of time for the Indonesian Football Association to organize this [meeting] because it's not a bad thing. Can you already speak Indonesian? No, no, I don't speak Indonesian yet. I really respect Indonesian. I was annoyed by Hanu Berns because he was already speaking Indonesian. I only know a few important words like “good morning”, “good evening”, “how are you”, “good evening”, “good morning”, “good”. I have an app on my phone to learn a few words every day. It's a beautiful language, maybe in the next few months I'll be able to learn more other vocabulary words.
